Will You Be Required to Install an IID in Your Car?
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a mechanism that prevents you from starting your car until you have passed an automated breath test, then tests you again at random intervals once you start driving. If you are required to install an IID, it will be at your own expense.
Currently, anyone convicted of drunk driving in Alameda, Sacramento or Los Angeles counties must install an IID. In other California counties, the judge can require you to install an IID for up to three years if you are convicted of DUI with any of the following allegations:
- Excessive blood alcohol level : Blood alcohol content (BAC) of .15 or higher
- Chemical test refusal : Refusing to take a valid breath, blood or urine test
- Prior convictions: Two or more prior DUIs or other traffic violations
You may also be required to install an IID if you are convicted of DUI and then later convicted of driving while your license is still suspended or revoked. The only way you can get out of installing an IID under any of these circumstances is to give up your driver's license.
